The Darling, the hotel belonging to Sydney’s newly renovated The Star casino and entertainment complex, has taken home the award for the Best New Hotel Design and Construction in the Asia Pacific region.

The 2012 Asia Pacific Hotel Awards, hosted last week in Kuala Lumpur, recognised The Darling’s winning combination of green credentials, architectural merit and design in a category that judges outstanding luxury hotels that are purpose-built for conventions, golf, airports or resorts.

“Winning this award demonstrates our capability in designing and constructing premier, world-class hotels,” said David Ghannoum, regional managing director NSW at construction firm Brookfield Multiplex, which worked on The Darling project alongside renowned Sydney architects Cox Richardson and interior designers DBI Design.

The regional win sets Brookfield Multiplex up as an international finalist, with the global winner decided later this year.

“The construction team went to extensive lengths to ensure the hotel was built to the highest standard using the finest materials and state-of-the-art finishes. The results speak for themselves,” said Ghannoum.

The Star upgrade and expansion cost $870 million. It now encompasses a range of upmarket entertainment facilities including a major, high-end boutique and restaurant precinct.
