The Western Australian Institute for Medical Research (WAIMR) has appointed Brookfield Multiplex as the managing contractor for its $46 million medical research facility at the Fiona Stanley Hospital in Murdoch.

Brookfield Multiplex’s strong history in delivering world-class research facilities across Australia led to the construction appointment, which will involve a 8,000m2 site located at the entrance of the new hospital on Robin Warren Drive. Construction activity began in February.

The seven-level state-of-the-art facility will be an adult medical research centre, investigating the genetic and environmental causes of a range of diseases, as well as undertaking vital clinical research into new treatment options for a variety of diseases.

“This is a pivotal medical research facility for the West Australian community and we are excited to build a project which will impact so directly on people’s lives,” said John Flecker, CEO of Brookfield Multiplex.

Scheduled for completion in 2013 and to open in 2014, the research facility will house 360 staff and comprise five levels of laboratory and clinical research space including two levels of laboratories, desktop research areas and clinical research rooms.

Brookfield Multiplex has built more than 40 hospitals internationally, and its suite of current projects includes the $2 billion Fiona Stanley Hospital in Murdoch which is due for completion late 2013 concurrent with the research facility.
