The Australian Institute of Project management has named a desalination project in Western Australia its Project of the Year.

The Southern Seawater Desalination Project by Water Corporation (pictured) first won its category, Construction/Engineering over $100 million, before being announced as the overall winning project in Australia at the Project Management Achievement Awards (PMAA) gala dinner.

The desalination project, under Western Australia’s Integrated Water Supply Scheme, has alleviated water shortages in Perth, Mandurah, the Goldfields and Kalgoorlie.

Other wins for the project were for individuals, Nick Churchill, named Project Director of the Year, and Suzanne Brown as Project Team Member of the Year, making Water Corporation the most awarded organisation and Western Australia the most awarded state.

National PMAA Chair Peter Fowler said this year’s finalists provided high calibre solutions for their respective organisations. “We had many examples of complex and challenging projects, which had been managed well and obviously contributed to the successes for their own organisations.”
