Funding and the future of project management

The economic status quo will decide the future of program, portfolio and project management, according to Andrew Leicester, director of PMGlobal.

Announcing the 10th Annual Project Management Australia Conference (PMOz 2013), themed ‘Driving and sustaining the Future of the Australian Economy’, Leicester said recent economic activity had already shown how organisations have used projects, programs and portfolios to achieve better return on investment.

Despite the impact of financial crises and natural disasters, the Australian economy has demonstrated to the rest of the world a level of fiscal stability as a result of a strong investment in infrastructure projects. This year alone, there has been more than $424 billion of investment into projects in the construction, mining and gas industries.

Australian resources, including its people, are a major factor in Australia being ranked one of the most enviable economies in the developed world. Nonetheless, the Australian people watch the new economic turmoil currently effecting the USA and Europe with trepidation and uncertainty.

With the increase of economic uncertainty worldwide it came as no surprise this year when the Federal Government raised issues around the role of alternative sources of finance such as superannuation funds, the high cost of preparing bids for infrastructure projects, and the desirability of developing an enhanced investment pipeline to reduce uncertainty surrounding upcoming projects.

“It is essential that project managers at all levels and in all areas know how professional they have to be; what they have to do; how to make it work at a high level; how portfolio, program and project management will affect the national economy, and to understand that if they don’t do it all at a high level, then the economy is going to fade,” said Leicester.

PMOz 2013 will thus address portfolio, program and project management’s role in the future of the Australian economy.
