The Australian Institute of Project Management (AIPM) has named the Esperance Cleanup and Recovery its Project of the Year.

At the Project Management Achievement Awards ceremony earlier this week, the winning Western Australian project and national finalist first picked up the Regional Award the category section before receiving the major accolade. Matthew Devenish from the Department of Transport also took home Project Manager of the Year for his role in the project.

The Esperance Cleanup and Recovery Project was initiated by the WA Department of Transport to address environmental contamination caused by lead dust that posed a significant health risk to the Esperance community. The success of the project saw many residents who moved away because of the contamination return.

The annual awards also recognised projects in categories from construction/engineering, defence and IT to change, sustainability and community.

“The calibre of entries into this years’ awards was extremely high and demonstrates the growth and maturity of project management across the industry,” said Margie O’ Tarpey, AIPM chief executive. “AIPM is proud to profile project management excellence and the improvement of processes and practices it brings to the industry.”
