The Australian Turf Club (ATC) has appointed Brookfield Multiplex as the construction contractor for the $150 million Royal Randwick Racecourse redevelopment project in New South Wales. Construction is scheduled to commence in January 2012.

ATC chairman John Cornish welcomed Brookfield Multiplex to the project team alongside base building architects Fitzpatrick+Partners, interior architects Woods Bagot, and ATC’s internal Property & Development staff.

“Brookfield Multiplex has impeccable credentials in constructing buildings of quality and magnitude throughout the world and we are confident they will deliver a superior project for us,” Cornish said.

George Kostas, managing director of Construction and Development for Brookfield Multiplex, said the redevelopment is the latest in a long line of sports and tourism projects Brookfield Multiplex has contributed to, including Federation Square Melbourne, Stadium Australia at Homebush, Suncorp Stadium Brisbane, the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre and The Star at Pyrmont.

“We are delighted to bring our construction expertise to Royal Randwick and play a leading role in delivering Australia’s premier racing venue. Our team is on the ground and ready to commence the challenging task of working within a fully operational facility here at Randwick Racecourse”, he said.

The Grandstand and Theatre of the Horse is the first project in a grand plan for Royal Randwick Racecourse, which will also include facilities to cater for non-race functions. ATC is also developing its masterplan for Rosehill Gardens and Warwick Farm racecourses.
